'Teach for Haiti' Service Trip
Haitian American Student Association (HASA) alongside with the Progressive Efforts in the Advancement to Change Haiti (PEACH) organization is planning a service trip to Haiti to help bring Haiti towards a place of prosperity, sustainability, and tranquility. Through collaborative efforts in both fundraising and service projects, HASA and PEACH strive to create real positive change in our native country of Haiti.
The purpose of this specific community service trip is to help Teach for Haiti improve the existing education programs in the 32 public schools that they nourish. Specifically, we will be assisting with the teacher/leader training programs that Teach for Haiti facilitates, as well as organizing their library and painting some of their facilities. In addition, the participants will engage in Haitian culture on a few excursions to museums and sites to see.
It is imperative for HASA and PEACH to fulfill this mission because, over the years, education in Haiti has begun to take a backseat in favor of other things such as commercialism, growing businesses, and politics. Many other organizations have come into Haiti pouring their resources and finances into building or expanding private schools in Haiti, which are too expensive or far away for the majority of Haiti’s youth. PEACH recognizes that the neglect of the improvement of public education in Haiti is one of the most detrimental disasters happening to Haiti’s future. Coming from a university that encourages diversity and education, PEACH participants are willing to carry those values to Haiti’s education system in partnership with ‘Teach for Haiti.’
