For over 30 years, the Not Ready For Bedtime Players have entertained the UMass Amherst campus with meaningful, engaging, and hilarious skits about sexual health and peer health education. For the first time in our history, we have been accepted to present at a national conference—the American College Health Association National Conference in Orlando, Florida during the week of May 19-22, 2015. It is a wonderful honor for our entire troupe to be invited to present to thousands of students and health educators around the country.
The Not Ready for Bedtime Players has been asked to give a 90-minute presentation at the ACHA conference. The title of our presentation is “Peer education, social justice and theater: A framework for sexual health education on college campus,” in which our troupe members will discuss our unique style of sex-positive peer health educational theatre, and we will give an abbreviated performance of our skits.
We will present on the reality that peer education is a well-established health promotion technique on college campuses. Our session/performance builds on peer health theater as a tool in college health, and considers critical pedagogy in health promotion.
Since its inception in 1920, the American College Health Association has been dedicated to the health needs of students at colleges and universities. It is the principal leadership organization for the field of college health and provides services, communications, and advocacy that help its members to advance the health of their campus communities.
The annual meeting gives members and nonmembers alike a once-a-year opportunity to develop professional knowledge, network with peers and mentors, earn continuing education credits, and explore firsthand college health-related products and services.
However, our funding is not as sexy as our skits—this means we would like to ask our friends, colleagues, and other community members to support our dream of presenting at this conference by donating to our fund to make sure that we can attend as a full troupe! We have spent years making our community laugh while providing a great deal of health education along the way, and now we hope that we will gain the support to do what we do best!
