Amherst Wire needs help to send our 11-member editorial leadership team to the College Media Association Conference in New York City in March. Our team has been selected to present a workshop on using Facebook Live to several hundred student journalists. Students will cover their own food and incidental costs, but we need help paying for transportation, accommodations and registration.

Amherst Wire is the student-run digital media organization based in the Journalism Department. We emphasize leadership and entrepreneurial skills as well as traditional journalistic skills in reporting, writing, editing, digital production and social media strategies.

A trip to this conference will enable our editors to learn about emerging digital publishing technologies, journalism, and social media skills. They’ll be networking with potential employers and fellow student journalists from around the country. In addition to the conference, we are  planning meetups with UMass alumni working in media in New York City, including outlets like NBC News and the New York Times.

At Amherst Wire, students experiment and innovate with story styles and platforms. These experiences are invaluable to students as they pursue jobs in an ever-changing technology and media landscape. Our motto is : "GetWired, GetHired." And they do.

We publish student work generated in journalism classes, along with fresh work reported and written by our staff. Amherst Wire also serves as an outlet for non-traditional, more creative content produced by journalism students, including a five-part web comedy series based on undergraduate life at UMass, called Help House, and podcasts, like Glass Half Full.
