The energy system of the future must be both sustainable and equitable

The rapid transition to an energy system based on renewable electricity sources instead of fossil fuels is one of the great challenges facing humanity. It also offers a unique opportunity to reshape our society to be more equitable and more sustainable. To address this challenge, ELEVATE draws upon expertise in a wide range of research fields to train graduate students to address resilience and equity in the energy transition.

We envision a US energy transition that addresses inequities in the energy system and contributes to economic inclusion, equality, and justice while achieving the rapid decarbonization essential to protect human and environmental well-being.

Our mission is to enable a fast and fair transition to a decarbonized energy system in the United States. We do stakeholder-engaged interdisciplinary research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with a dual focus on technology systems and human systems to enable an equitable energy transition.

We operate with a commitment to free, open, and ethical interdisciplinary research that contributes to a fair and just society.
